Growing Participation and Passion for Cricket
This season has been an inspiring one for the Basel Dragons Junior Cricket Club. Our U7 and U9 groups have continued to grow, welcoming enthusiastic players as young as five years old, proving that it’s never too early to fall in love with cricket. By nurturing talent from such a young age, we are helping to keep the passion for the game alive in Switzerland, while laying strong foundations for future generations of players.
Training and Development
The regular training sessions at Bachgraben have been a highlight of the year, consistently drawing more than 20 young cricketers per session. Under the guidance of our ICC Level 1 certified coaches, players have shown tremendous improvement in their cricketing skills and game awareness. It has been a joy to witness their growth – from mastering the basics of batting and bowling to developing teamwork and match temperament.
Many of our players also had the opportunity to train in nets alongside higher age groups, allowing them to learn from their peers and challenge themselves against stronger opposition. This exposure has played a key role in accelerating their progress.
Basel Indoors Tournament – A Celebration of Talent
One of the major highlights of the season was the Basel Indoors U7/U9 Tournament held on April 5 at the Margarethenhalle in Basel Stadt. The event brought together eight enthusiastic U9 teams from across Europe, including sides from Munich, Stuttgart, Luxembourg, Zürich, and of course, the Basel Dragons boys and girls.
The matches were filled with excitement, skill, and sportsmanship, with TSG Rohrbach eventually lifting the U9 trophy after a thrilling final against Luxembourg Team 1. Our U7 Dragons boys and girls also took to the field in spirited back-to-back matches, showcasing their energy, determination, and growing skills – with the boys narrowly clinching victory.
This tournament was about much more than just results. It highlighted the spirit of community, diversity, and inclusiveness that cricket fosters. Players, coaches, and families came together to celebrate the game, making it an unforgettable day.
Zuoz Outdoor Tournament – Trophy Retained !
Another unforgettable highlight of the year was the Zuoz Outdoor Tournament, held on the 24th of May 2025 in the breathtaking alpine setting of Graubünden. For the U9s, it was a particularly special occasion, as their tournament concluded in a single, action-packed day.
The competition featured three teams: Basel Dragons, Zürich, and the Swiss Girls. After strong displays, it all came down to a deciding clash between Zürich and Basel. In a thrilling contest, the young Dragons rose to the challenge and emerged victorious, ensuring the U9s retained the Zuoz trophy for another year.
Every player contributed with energy, skill, and determination, reflecting the commitment shown in training throughout the season. Just as importantly, the team embodied the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship, making the win a proud moment for both players and coaches.
Looking Ahead
As we close the season, we are filled with pride at the progress of our youngest Dragons and excitement for the future. With growing participation, skilled coaching, and supportive families, the Basel Dragons U7 and U9 teams are building a strong foundation for cricket in Switzerland.
We look forward to another year of growth, competition, and fun – and we can’t wait to see our young Dragons soar even higher next season!
