The local cricket scene in Basel witnessed a spectacular display of junior talent on April 25th, as the BDJCC U9 Annual Indoors Tournament 2026 took center stage. It was a day defined by high-quality cricket, competitive intensity, and the undeniable growth of our young athletes. Most significantly, this year marked a historic milestone: for the first time in the tournament’s history, the Basel Dragons secured a podium finish on home soil.
Dragons Fire: Clinical Performances Secure Silver
The Dragons Fire squad lived up to their name throughout the day, showcasing a blend of aggressive batting and disciplined bowling. Their journey to the final featured several standout performances:
• Dominant Batting: In their league match against the Heidelberg Broncos, the Fire posted a massive 92/2, led by excellent batting from the captain Aaroh Jha (16 off 12) and Vidhyuth Srinivas Kashyap (16 off 8). They later overwhelmed Zurich CCC, scoring 82/5 thanks to an explosive 26 off 10 balls from Sharvesh LP.
• Worthy Runners-Up: The grand final was a low-scoring, high-pressure thriller against Luxembourg. Despite a tight bowling by Priyansh Modi (2 wickets for 7 runs), Luxembourg chased down the target of 44 to take the title. The Fire finished as very worthy silver medalists, a testament to their consistency all day.
Dragons Stars: A Heart-Stopping Battle for the Third Place
The Dragons Stars provided some of the tournament's most exciting moments, highlighted by their resilience and a series of "last-ball" thrillers.
• League Success: The Stars secured a vital 11-run victory over Zurich CCC, propelled by Agastya Sharma’s lightning-fast 19 off just 6 balls (SR 316.67) and his 2-wicket haul.
• The Whisker of a Loss: The third-place playoff against the Heidelberg Broncos was the game of the tournament. The Stars set a formidable 95/2, with Adhrit Khandekar (21 off 10) and the captain Riccardo Visentin (20 off 7) showing dominant batting. In a dramatic finish, Heidelberg managed to chase the target on the final delivery.
A Bright Future Ahead
Beyond the scorecards, the tournament was a celebration of the "spirit of cricket". Every player, from the boundary-hitters to the energetic fielders, made the community proud. Special recognition goes to Taanishri Prabhu, who was instrumental for the Fire with her allround performances with bat, ball and also in the field, and to Rhea Ashwin, who remained a consistent threat for the Stars.
With a trophy now in the cabinet and the quality of play reaching new heights, the Basel Dragons U9 program has proven it is a force to be reckoned with. We look forward to building on this momentum—the best is yet to come!
